How to Stop a Program From Launching at Startup (Windows Vista)

Vista Startup Removal MainHaving several programs open up every time you turn your computer on can be a useful feature because it makes sure that your most used programs open quickly. Unfortunately, some computers are configured to have programs that you rarely use open every time you boot up your computer.This happens because new programs will set themselves to start up every time Windows turns on. The unnecessary programs that you don’t need immediately when turning on your machine can slow your computer down significantly.

Thankfully stopping programs from starting up with the computer in Windows Vista is much simpler than in it was in earlier versions of Windows. In fact it’s so simple that you’ll have your unwanted programs removed and you computer running faster, quicker than you can call your neighbor for help!

To remove programs from Startup, you first need to click on the Start Menu in the lower left corner of your screen and move your cursor to “Control Panel” as shown in the image below.Vista Startup Removal 1

After clicking on Control Panel you’ll see many options, but you won’t need to worry about them; just click in search box in the upper right and type, “startup”.

After a second, your screen will look like the image above with the first option showing Windows Defender. Click on the Windows Defender icon to start removing the programs from startup which you don’t need.

This screen will show you everything that starts up when you turn your computer on. Don’t worry if you don’t recognize all of the listings here- many of them are part of Windows and should be left alone.

Scroll down through the list of programs until you find the program you want to stop from starting every time you turn on your computer. In this example, we are removing an instant messaging application (Trillian) but you can remove any program you don’t use often which opens up during startup and slows down your computer. After you click on the program’s name, click on the Remove button at the bottom of the screen.

You’ll get one more window, which confirms that you do want to remove the program from startup. Just click on Yes and you’ll be done! Repeat the steps for any more programs you don’t want to start every time you boot up your machine. If you remove unused and unwanted programs from startup in Windows Vista, you’ll maximize the startup speed of your computer because there won’t as many programs to open!
